Product Development Dilemma

Should Operations adapt to the product — or should the product be designed for Operations? The strongest answer is an end-to-end, cross-functional product system.

You found a real customer need. Marketing and Engineering are aligned. The concept works. Great. A good concept is still a long way from a successful product.

Optimize time-to-market, not every individual step

Speed matters. Shorten supply chains where possible and avoid optimizing every individual activity for the lowest possible cost if it makes the total development cycle slower. The goal is competitive time-to-market with the right quality and business case.

One project. One accountable project leader.

Engineering, Marketing, Manufacturing, Quality and Supply Chain all need strong representation, but overall leadership and accountability should sit with one empowered project leader. Wider update meetings should share status, risks, decisions and actions; smaller working sessions should solve the problems.

Manufacturing belongs in development early

Do not wait for released drawings. Manufacturing should challenge the design while it can still be changed: how will it be assembled, what is difficult to manufacture, where can mistakes happen, and what can be simplified?

Design for the customer — but design for manufacturing and assembly too. Manufacturing should love building the product.

Do not make the customer your final inspection station

During ramp-up, temporary additional inspection and containment can be a sensible cost. Once quality is stable, validate the product again with real customers, learn from their experience and close the loop.

Launch is not the finish line

Aftermarket is part of the product experience: spare parts, warranty support, repair, training and maintenance content all shape whether customers trust the brand and return.

Warranty data, repairs, returns, reviews, customer feedback and service experience should feed the next Stage 0. Product development is a loop: Listen → Develop → Industrialize → Launch → Learn → Listen again.
